Janie Haugen-McLane developed the Survival Signs Curriculum to
give teachers a step-by-step way to help students learn the meaning
of 80 indoor and outdoor signs found in the community and at home
and work.
The curriculum instruction method gives detailed explanations of
both the visuals and the words on each sign. A perfect teaching tool
for the inclusive classroom, the guide includes discussion
activities and charts for the teacher to record the various places
in the community where each sign is located. Students who are
nonreaders or who have limited reading skills can rely on visuals on
the survival signs to determine each sign's meaning. The overall
purpose of the program is to prepare students of all abilities to
follow the directions on common community survival signs. This
method allows many students to travel safely in the community.
Components
Teacher's Binder
A sturdy three-ring binder contains a two-page teaching guide for
each of the 40 outdoor and 40 indoor survival signs. The Guide also
includes discussion activities and a reproducible Community Trip
Record Chart for the teacher to record the various places in the
community where each sign is located.
Survival Signs Posters
These 40 double-sided posters cover 80 common signs found both
inside and on the outside of buildings such as schools, workplaces,
stores, malls, office complexes, private homes, hospitals, and
doctors' offices. PCI has authentically reproduced these signs to
represent as closely as possible the actual signs found in the
community. Many of the signs reflect the colors individuals need to
know for safety reasons (e.g., red for danger, yellow for caution,
etc.)
The posters are appropriate for use with pre-kindergarten and
kindergarten students; elementary-age school students of all
abilities; middle and high school students with developmental
disabilities; adults with developmental disabilities; middle and
high school students with learning differences; adults in "life
skills" reading programs; and all ages in English as a
second-language classes.
The 9" x 12" signs are printed on heavy card stock and are ideal for
inclusive teaching settings and peer-buddy groups. They feature
international graphic symbols to assist individuals who have limited
reading skills in learning to identify them. They also make learning
easier for visual learners. A reproducible Pre/Post Test Assessment
is included with complete teacher instructions in each set.
