Cooking to Learn

Cooking to Learn (Set 1)
Basic reading skills are fun and easy using these valuable
"hands-on" life skills programs for students of varying ages and
abilities. Cooking to Learn and Cooking to Learn 2 are designed to
provide a practical way to increase reading comprehension,
vocabulary, expressive and written language, problem solving, math,
and science skills. Students will enjoy the simple routines of
preparing recipes for one or more people, making the program ideal
for individual or small group use. Teachers will appreciate the
inexpensive ingredients used in all the recipes.
Using 29 reproducible cooking activities, this unique program allows
each student to work at their own level of ability. Students are
rewarded with a sense of accomplishment as they identify and
assemble ingredients, follow step-by-step instructions, and complete
a finished product. Students also develop self-esteem as they
experience increased independence by learning a skill that is
meaningful and useful. Afterwards, they complete activity worksheets
relating to the task they just completed. As skill levels increase,
these activities progress from multiple choice to short answer to
essay and cloze activities.
Cooking to Learn comes in a sturdy, 3-ring binder with tabbed
sections. Some recipes provide directions for a single serving,
while many others make multiple servings. Each cooking activity
takes between 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

Cooking to Learn 2
Like the popular Cooking to Learn program, the second version uses
fun, easy-to-follow recipes to motivate students to practice basic
reading and writing skills. Each recipe includes illustrated and
non-illustrated activities to allow teachers to use the same lesson
plan with students of varying abilities. Students learn
''real-world'' life skills as they prepare the recipes.
Reading & Writing Activities
Coauthors Lorraine Coxson, a speech-language pathologist, and
Crystalyn Nilson, a special education teacher, created both versions
of Cooking to Learn to help students improve basic reading and
writing skills. The reproducible activities for each recipe feature
multiple-choice, short-answer, fill-in-the-blank, and writing
exercises that focus on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and
problem-solving skills. The multiple-choice activities (offered in
both illustrated and non-illustrated versions) prepare students for
standardized testing formats.
Recipe Format
Each of the 29 new recipes follows the same format as the recipes in
Cooking to Learn. Materials needed for each recipe are listed along
with step-by-step directions. For nonreaders and struggling readers,
the illustrated directions show each step, including pouring
ingredients into a pan, turning the dial to set the stovetop burner
or oven temperature, using an oven mitt to remove a pan or a baking
sheet, and adding final toppings.
New Recipes
Recipes in Cooking to Learn 2 include a selection of breakfast,
lunch or dinner, snack and dessert, and drink choices. All of the
ingredients are inexpensive and easy to find. Some of the recipes
include a bagel treat, breakfast burritos, a pancake roll-up, cheese
bread, cracker pepperoni melts, a tuna melt, fruit pizza, raspberry
twists, a chocolate croissant, red lemonade, hot chocolate, and
more.
