These all-new Sterling Editions of First Words, First Words II, and First Verbs provide highly-structured training of early developing nouns and verbs. Each program trains 50 words in developmental order, but focuses on only 5 words at a time. Words are presented in isolation or with one other picture on the screen. You can choose to work on a black or full-scene background.
Laureate's new Optimized Intervention® technology begins with a probe test to identify 5 words the student doesn’t already know. During training, students are presented with 2 pictures and asked to identify one of them (e.g. “Find the cow.”) The program monitors each student response and then automatically adjusts the training level (1-5) of each word. At the lower levels of training, the Blob reinforces correct answers with his amusing antics.
Each time a word is mastered, a new word enters into training. At the end of each lesson, a summary of the student’s performance is presented, allowing you to quickly review your student’s progress and ensure accountability.
Higher Levels of Training
A new character named Zot uses expanded language. Research has shown that this enhances vocabulary acquisition. In First Words and First Words II, Zot’s speech uses the nouns from training with various Determiners, plurals, and prepositions. In First Verbs, Zot’s speech includes the use of a variety of verb inflections in varying contexts.
5 Levels of Training
1.Instructional Introduction uses a single picture in the middle of the screen (photo to right). Instruction, cuing, and feedback are included.
2.Single Picture Training offers a picture that relocates left or right. Instruction, cuing, and feedback are used.
3. Basic Two-Picture Training adds a second picture and provides instruction, cuing, and feedback.
4. Intermediate Training includes instruction and feedback, but cuing is faded.
5. Advanced Training gives feedback only.
3 Supplemental Activities
6 activities in all: in addition to Optimized Intervention®, training, and testing, you'll find 3 supplemental activities to enhance you students' learning experience. You can use them to introduce or reinforce vocabulary.

This program uses colorful pictures, an encouraging voice, and the lovable Blob to teach and test 50 of the earliest developing nouns within 10 categories. Each noun is represented by 2 illustrations. Offers the consistent, focused, and supportive learning environment that many people with special needs require to acquire an initial vocabulary.
